SPACE TOURISM

Though no international space treaties clearly anticipate commercial space tourism or contains specifically applicable provisions, the US Commercial Space Launch Amendments Act of 2004 (CSLAA) does, setting out safety guidelines for commercial space tourism flights.

Under the law, representatives from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) must attend every commercial space flight launch, evaluate landings, and otherwise work cooperatively with companies operating in the realm of American commercial space tourism.

Regulations adopted by the FAA in 2006 served to compliment the CSLAA by establishing “rules on crew qualifications and training, and informed consent for crew and space flight participants.”

No other nation appears to have laws equivalent to the CSLAA, notwithstanding the fact that the Russian Space Agency has already begun providing orbital space tourism, and that Sweden agreed to create a similar law in a 2007 agreement between the Scandinavian nation and Virgin Galactic.
